a number of years ago, while working as a production manager and furniture maker for a custom reclaimed furniture company, I was preparing to start a customer project for a kitchen table. I remember taking a good look at the materials I had selected that morning for the project. It was nasty at best. For someone like myself, who was used to working with new materials, I loved the challenge that came from working with materials that had seen better days. This particular day though I remember thinking to myself, "its hard to imagine that something of value and beauty is hiding in all this." It was a light bulb moment; an epiphany that would stay with me and become the essence of what Modern Relic Eccentrics is. I began The process of removing the years of dirt and grime that had accumulated on the material. Then I had to mill the material to make it usable. After all that, the process of cutting, sanding and shaping the reused material culminated in a beautiful new table. During the process that morning, I repeatedly caught myself thinking that at one time this old wood had been new wood. It had been fresh, clean and unmarked by time. It had a past and a purpose. The years had taken their toll and now here it was, rescued from being cast away and sitting on my bench, being prepared for a new life and purpose. It was a life lesson that I came away with that day. This old wood, to me in those moments, was a reflection of so many people in our world. People once untouched by life choices and circumstances, now battered and scarred. The years have taken their toll and to most passers by, they are unwanted, cast offs and forgotten. All they need is someone to be able to see through the grime and the wear and see the new potential hiding beneath it all.
